The staple 140 character limit of twitter could be lifted to 10,000 characters per tweet.
From the inception of twitter ,the micro blogging site major appeal has been the ability to make users compress their ideas and thoughts into a short bite sized format by limiting tweets to 140 characters, this made all tweets accessible and to the point.
Twitter is now looking to launch a new feature in the first quarter of 2016 to change the traditional format of 140 characters to 10,000. This is a lot higher, a little over 71 times to be exact. In comparison, Facebook’s character limit for status updates currently stands at 63,206 characters.
Before you go screaming this will ruin twitter (which it could) twitter is said to be currently testing a version of the micro-blogging network in which tweets will retain their 140 character look, displaying just 140 characters with an action button signifying that there is more to see. Clicking on the button or the tweet itself would then expand it to reveal more content, sources say.
Is this development going to affect twitter adversely?
That is yet to be seen, but while many have been lamenting the current character limit on Twitter which often forced users to post tweets in a sequence in order to fully express themselves, it has also made users think creatively to compose a tweet within the 140 character limit. Changing the character limit may disrupt the feel of twitter and end up affecting the overall user experience.
