Hate + Hate =/= Love |
From a very young age, humans begin to show their nature and some exhibit the signs of irresponsibility very early on. Two brother of age 8 are left alone at home for a few minutes, the taller one goes to steal some candy and when he’s caught, he refuses to be held accountable for his actions but rather blames his twin brother for sending him to steal the candy.
Unfortunately, most people in the world today do not outgrow the need to always look for someone else to blame when something goes wrong. In the world today, even countries act the same way and still blame other countries when something goes wrong because of a wrong the other country did 200 years ago. Here we explore how people in Nigeria choose to solve the problems in the society by hating the western world or to keep things short, blaming the white people for all our problems.
The other day, we were having a discussion about the things going wrong in Nigeria today, and some fellas in the room still had to take things way back to the colonial era to blame our current problems in Nigeria on the British. If you have no idea, the current problems faced in Nigeria range from poor infrastructure, power supply, down to poverty, and the greed of politicians.
However, when you take some time to observe these fellas, they are wearing British designer wristwatches, wearing a suit and tie, using an iPhone, driving a Ford, using a shower to bath in the morning, using stainless steel cutleries to eat, posting pictures on Instagram and using a computer to assist in their daily jobs.
Now, all of these things did not originate in Nigeria and they feel so accomplished enjoying all these devices and equipment however, when it’s time to lay blame on why the country is so corrupt, “it the fault of the British”, “the Americans are at it again”. Currently, Nigeria is one of the countries with the most natural resources in the world however we are also one of the poorest nations with around 95% per cent of the population living on less than $4 dollars a day. Rather than holding the politicians accountable for their actions, we now look outside to lay blame on the foreigners.
The western hate bandwagon also gave rise to the extremist terrorist organization known as “Boko Haram” who claim to be against anything western however, when they go into villages to kidnap girls, send suicide bombers into market squares, detonate a bomb in a mosque, and kill thousands of people, no individual from the west is killed. It is the Nigerian indigenous people who end up dead and it is the people who always pay the price when anything goes wrong in the society.
When you walk around to get the opinions of younger people regarding the current state of the country, a common statement they make is that “I cannot wait to enter political office to steal my own money” or as they also say it “get my share of the national cake”. Before we can see change on the outside, we need to change from the inside. Please leave your comments below. Cheers.
